Things I Eat

March 2, 2012 [Cafe Koi]

I can’t recall why a couple of friends and I wanted to go here but we had a reason.
Anywho, it’s a very neat place. Right beside a couple of shisha bars.

We went in and it was moderately filled. We had reservations so we were seated right away. It’s pretty dark inside and all the tables are very close together. There’s a stage on one side so I looked a bit into this place when I got home and apparently, they hold a few shows quite often (scroll to the very bottom for the schedule). From live performances of jazz to comedy nights to open mic nights. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

I got a fuzzy navel to drink.
It’s a pretty ridiculous name but it’s very delicious.

A friend got some cranberry drink. I ate a cranberry. Never again. NEVER. AGAIN.

Yam-abushi
our signature yam wedges served with our own garlic curry and miso dip
$8.95

This was totally not what I expected. The yam was soft and I expected it to be deep fried. The dips were really interesting. The curry was kind of spicy and buttery and the miso dip was kind of like steak sauce with a nice tang.

The Lee Pacino
homestyle tomato sauce simmered with penne, spinach and topped with vegan  bean balls and asiago cheese
$14.35
I don’t know if it’s just me or if the bean balls were burnt but they didn’t taste all too great. Nothing about this dish was special to me.

friends’ dish.

After we were finished with our entrees, it took a while for the servers to come back to us so we could ask for the dessert menu. They were busy cleaning up the restaurant because we were one of the last ones to go.
The servers were all very kind but we waited a LONG time to get the dessert menu and when we finally got it, we waited quite a while for them to get back to us to get our order for dessert.

Warm Fruit Filo Crisp
hand crafted filo pouches with fruit filling dusted with cinnamon sugar and oven-baked. served with ice cream, chocolate and caramel. ask your server for daily fruit flavor
$8.49
Awwww man I forgot what was inside. It was either peaches or apple although I’m pretty sure it was apple. It was quite good but cutting the filo was a bit difficult.

Personally, I felt the food was overpriced for what it actually was. It makes itself seem to be Japanese themed restaurant but the food had no hint of Japanese whatsoever. Music was good though. Indie. Yay.

February 22, 2012 [Don Day]

So I took my aunt who was visiting from the Philippines downtown for some sightseeing and shopping and of course, eating!
My aunt said she had really been craving that one Korean dish she wanted to eat but neither of us knew what she was talking about.
So before some shopping, we went to Don Day about an hour before they closed for the afternoon.

We went in and there was only one table besides us. We ordered and watched the k-pop MVs while we were waiting for our food. My aunt was really good with k-pop culture. She knew all the bands and people and stuff while I’m quite outdated with it. It seems the hallyu wave hit the Philippines like a tsunami because my aunt says everyone there is really into it. I remember when I was way younger and visited relatives in the Philippines, they almost scoffed at me for only watching arirang. Pfft if there was a hipster cred score, I would have like +10.

Anywho, after talking about the music and whatever, our food came~

Pajeon~

Tofu Soup~

Fish Cake Soup!
So this is what my aunt was talking about! It was quite good (:

After eating, we went shopping~~

Then we got bubbletea at Dragon City Mall before going home (:

PSA for Albertans

Tomorrow is election day so be sure to get out there and vote!

….

But if you don’t know who to vote for, vote for PC for the sake of strategic voting.
I swear, if Wild Rose wins, I’m gonna have to speed up my goal of leaving this disgustingly conservative province. Touch the human rights commission to EXCLUDE certain groups and one person from their party is against the policy that protects bullying of gays and lesbians in schools. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.

I could go on but I`m sure none of you want me to. Just vote.
I understand that there are some good reasons to vote for Wild Rose but discrimination is intolerable for me therefore they do not receive my vote.

Anywho tomorrow is the big day! Exercise dem rights.

February 20, 2012 [Part 2/2: Alloy dessert]

We wanted to go have some coffee afterwards but one look at the desert menu and there’s no going back.

pumpkin spice creme brulee
fresh fruit . rum whipped cream
ugh yes so good. The entire plate was warm too. The whipped cream was absolutely delicious and everything tasted so good together *O*

Lemongrass panna cotta
lulo jalapeno . mago habanero . guava chilli
Goodness gracious was this delicious. The first thing I noticed was that the plate was icy cold. The taste of the lemongrass was so good and the little spice from the pepper sauces made each bite interesting. I would totally recommend everyone to taste this.

February 20, 2012 [Part 1/2: Alloy dinner]

First day of reading break. My friend brought me here because we had been talking about wanting to go to a somewhat fancy place for dinner. His sister recommended it.
Finding this place is pretty difficult because it’s kind of hidden between all the industrial area just off of Macleod Trail. I’m very curious as to why they would choose such a location haha. However, on our way there, I say a very interesting kitchen accessories store I would like to visit!

Anywho, when we finally found the place, I was pretty impressed by how it looked from the outside. It looked just like a very nice, modern house with big windows and pretty landscaping and such. The inside was very elegant was well with chandeliers and white couches.

We were given a wine menu first but my friend was driving and I didn’t want to drink by myself so that was a no-go. However, I was very flattered because we weren’t ID’d. Teehee.

After we got the dinner menu and ordered, we were given naan bread and hummus dip and olives as an on-the-house thing. What do they call it when they give you free stuff as a starter? The same way Kinjo always gives you like pieces of sushi before the stuff you order comes out. Someone educate me!

panko prawns
yuzu aioli . mango & pasilla pepper salsa
16
The mango sauce and mayo.. something I have to remind myself to make at home because it goes really well with the shrimp. However, the shrimp were really big and I didn’t know if it would be rude to eat with our hands so it was difficult to shop the shrimp up with my knife and fork >_<
I really like panko though so that was cool.

fettucine carbonara
house made pasta . roasted crimini mushrooms . prosciutto . deep fried yolk
22
My friend got this. The portion only looks small because the empty space on the plate is so freaking huge. What’s with that.

stuffed poblano pepper
zucchini . butternut squash . ritcotta & mascarpone . avocado cream
20
When the plate was first set in front of me, I thought it was a really small portion. It was really good though! All that cheese inside and the cream outside was so filling I could’t even finish it T__T

February 17, 2012 [Part 2/2: Ricky’s]

After we finished eating, we still wanted dessert. Someone suggested going to the cheesecake cafe so we drove around for a good 20 minutes trying to find it only to realize it’s been closed for a long time now haha. It’s some Indian restaurant now or something. We walked around Sunridge Mall for a bit and decided on going to Ricky’s for dessert.

I was sharing with a friend and we wanted the cheesecake sampler but a friend got the last one ;~; They were all the way on the other side of the table too so no sharing with them. In spite, we got two desserts between us instead of just one.

Apple Cheesecake (their seasonal cheesecake)

Sticky Toffee Pudding
Two layers of delicious spiced date sponge cake, each drenched with rich, buttery toffee sauce and separated by a generous layer of mellow whipped cream. Sinfully creamy!

Canned whipped cream. ugh. I was surprised my friend didn’t eat the whipped cream haha. I was proud of him for this little act.

Both desserts were good. Nothing special, really.
